Wikipedia says fudge began appearing during the 1880’s, where it was a popular recipe at women’s colleges. Mackinac Island in Michigan, is famous for its fudge recipes and fudge shops, and fudge first appeared in shops there in 1887.

Homemade fudge is a chocolate candy that has been made for over a century.  Back in 1880, it became a popular homemade candy due to the fact that you could make homemade fudge with no special tools, and the basic recipe used butter, sugar and milk.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 2/3 cups white sugar
  • 2/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 6 ounce package milk chocolate chips
  • 16 large marshmallows
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (use 2 tsps for more flavor)
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Instructions
 

  • Combine sugar, milk, butter, and salt in a medium-sized saucepan. Bring to a boil, cook 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Add in chocolate chips; cook until melted.
  • Remove from heat; stir in marshmallows, vanilla, and nuts.
  • Pour into an 8-inch pan.
  • Cool in the refrigerator then cut into squares.
