I was a cook for a living for a lot of years. Chocolate Bread Pudding was always a favorite dessert. We always had some stale bread we made delicious croutons with and used the rest in this recipe.
I would say lots of these older people made this often for their families as they were growing up. Is is so simple and inexpensive to make.

Bread pudding originated with 11th-century English cooks who repurposed leftover stale bread. In the following centuries, the dish became known as “poor man’s pudding” because of the scarcity of food at the time, with the pudding being made only with boiling water, sugar, and spices.
You can use any type of bread for chocolate bread pudding. So try out different types! (we like french bread) I have a son-in-law that is gluten-free so you can use cubes of gluten free bread instead of white bread.
INGREDIENTS TO MAKE THIS DECADENT TREAT…..
- Semisweet chocolate
- Half-and-half cream
- Sugar
- Milk
- Egg
- Vanilla extract
- Day-old bread
You can store any leftover chocolate bread pudding in a dish covered with plastic wrap for up to 3 days. It will never last that long guaranteed!!
We love to serve Chocolate Bread Pudding warm with a a dollop of whipped cream or a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top!

Ingredients
- 2 ounces semisweet chocolate
- 1/2 cup 1/2 cup half-and-half
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup 2% milk
- 1 large egg at room temperature
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 4 slices day-old bread, crusts removed, cut into cubes (about 3 cups)
Instructions
- In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate; stir until smooth. Stir in cream; set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk sugar, milk, egg, vanilla and salt. Stir in chocolate mixture. Add bread cubes and toss to coat. Let stand for 15 minutes.
- Spoon into 2 greased 2-cup souffle dishes or an 8×8 baking pan. Bake at 350° until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, 30-35 minutes.
- Serve with ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
