Holiday Favorite…Cheesy Bacon Green Bean Casserole
Thanksgiving is all about memories and family. It is so wonderful to see your family around the table talking and catching up. If you are like us we have family near and far.
We do have some family and grandkids close by and that makes your heart feel good, but with the empty chairs around your Thanksgiving table you sure miss everyone that is not there. There’s nothing quite like sitting down to a delicious meal with the ones you love.
What Thanksgiving spread is complete without a myriad of piping hot side dishes on the table? I have never been a fan of Green Bean Casserole with canned mushroom soup. But it was always on our table growing up.
This green bean casserole is made with real ingredients, and it is so easy to throw together in just minutes! You need to make this a must for your Thanksgiving table this year and every year.
WHO INVENTED GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE?
While it wasn’t always the Thanksgiving Day staple that it is now, green bean casserole has made its way into homes across America. Campbell’s Soup Company actually created the original recipe, or rather, Dorcas Reilly led the team that created Green Bean Casserole.
Reilly took two ingredients most homes in the 1950’s already had in their pantry and put them together to create this classic dish. Green Bean Casserole was not a well-loved recipe at first; however, with persistence it eventually became known as “the ultimate comfort food.” The original recipe is still one of the most loved and used even today.
I love November and December and all the yummy recipes you can make. They are two of the most delicious months of the year. There are so many favorite foods to make and serve your family.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR THIS CHEESY BACON GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE….
Cheddar Cheese
Butter
Onion
Green Beans
Bacon
Garlic
Flour
Chicken Broth
Salt and Pepper
Puff Pastry
This Cheesy Bacon Green Bean Casserole is better than grandma’s recipe. Yup I said that. The cheesy sauce and Puff Pastry kick it up a notch and screams comfort food.
Do not use canned green beans in this recipe. They will be all mushy in your casserole and you do not want that. Frozen or fresh green beans are going to give you the best flavor!

Ingredients
- 1/2 lb bacon sliced into 1/2 inch pieces
- 1 finely chopped medium onion
- 1 tbsp fresh minced garlic
- 12 oz bag of fresh trimmed green beans
- 1 stick butter
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
- 1 1/4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 sheet puff pastry thawed
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Cook bacon in medium dutch oven over medium heat until browned and crisped. Transfer bacon to a paper towel lined plate then discard all but 2 Tablespoons of bacon drippings.
- Saute onions in remaining bacon drippings until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in garlic and cook for a minute. Reduce heat to low.
- Boil green beans in pot for 5 minutes, until just fork tender.
- Add beans to onions and garlic along with the crisped bacon.
- To make sauce melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in flour, salt and pepper until well combined then whisk in chicken broth until thick and creamy, for about 3-4 minutes.
- Once hot and creamy add shredded cheese until melted.
- Pour cheese sauce over beans then transfer to a 9 inch pie plate.
- Trim square puff pastry edges to more of a round. Lay puff pastry over beans, folding edges under. Cut 4-5 slits to allow for steam to escape.

- Let cool for 15 minutes before slicing into.
- Enjoy!!
